Product Information:

The Gold Half Sovereign, minted by Britain’s Royal Mint, is a smaller version of the iconic Gold Sovereign. First introduced in 1544, it has remained a popular investment and collector’s item due to its 22-carat gold content, intricate design, and historical significance.

Each Half Sovereign features a portrait of the reigning British monarch on the obverse and the classic St. George slaying the dragon on the reverse. Due to their age (over 100 years old), these coins may exhibit minor variations in weight and purity—standard tolerances allow up to 1% variation. The original specification states a gold content of 3.987 grams within a total weight of 4.35 grams, with a 91.67% purity. However, older minting techniques and circulation wear may result in slight deviations.

These coins are highly sought after for their craftsmanship, gold content, and historical value. They also make excellent gifts and commemorative pieces due to their timeless elegance and association with British heritage.

  • Diameter: 22 mm
  • Thickness: 1.6 mm
  • Purity: 91.6%
  • Weight: 7.32 grams (0.235 troy oz)

Product Information:

The British Gold Sovereign is one of the most recognized and prestigious gold coins in the world, with a history dating back over 200 years to 1817. Containing nearly a quarter of a troy ounce of gold, it circulated widely in Britain and the British Empire throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

As with the Half Sovereign, these coins are over 100 years old, leading to minor variations in weight and purity due to past minting techniques and circulation. The original specifications state that each Sovereign contains 7.32 grams of gold within a total weight of 7.988 grams, with a 91.67% purity. A standard tolerance of up to 1% purity and 0.2 grams in weight is considered acceptable for these historic coins.

The obverse of each Sovereign features a portrait of a British monarch, while the reverse predominantly displays Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous depiction of St. George slaying the dragon, a design used since 1817.

Gold Sovereigns are highly liquid, widely recognized, and make for excellent investment pieces, collector’s items, and gifts. Their affordability, durability, and historical significance make them a valuable addition to any gold portfolio.
